HONEGGER KING DAVID a symphonic psalm after a drama by René Morax; March 8, 2008, 8:00 p.m.
First Baptist Church
17th & Sansom Streets, Philadelphia
Note from Alan Harler, Music Director:
The great 20th Century Swiss composer ARTHUR HONEGGER wrote about his music “My taste and effort have always been to write music that would be accessible to the great mass of listeners, and yet sufficiently free of banality to interest the connoisseurs.”
After the success of our highly dramatic performance of Mendelssohn's Elijah last spring, I searched for another oratorio that was propelled by vivid drama. René Morax’s dramatic libretto of the Old Testament story of King David compelled Honegger to write an equally dramatic “symphonic drama”. We will once again engage every corner of the magnificent First Baptist Church using solo voices, chorus and chamber orchestra to bring the story to exciting life.
